"Calories in versus calories out" is one of those phrases that's both true and misleading at the same time. The underlying physics is real — your body obeys the conservation of energy like everything else. But the phrase makes it sound like a simple two-number subtraction, and the reality is more interesting than that. Understanding where it holds and where it bends makes the numbers in a tool like Cal Core far more useful.
Energy balance is real. If you consistently take in more energy than you expend, your body stores the surplus, mostly as fat. If you consistently expend more than you take in, it draws on stores to cover the gap. No food is magic and no exercise breaks thermodynamics. That much is settled.
Where people go wrong is assuming both sides of the equation are fixed, knowable numbers. They aren't. Both "in" and "out" are moving estimates — and the "out" side in particular is made of four separate pieces, only one of which is exercise.

The overwhelming majority of your daily burn happens while you do nothing at all. Keeping your heart beating, your lungs moving, your brain running, and your body at temperature is metabolically expensive. For most people this basal rate is the biggest single line item by a wide margin — which is why two people can eat identically and still diverge, purely from differences in baseline metabolism.
Digesting and processing what you eat costs energy too. Protein is the most expensive to process, which is part of why higher-protein meals feel more "filling" per calorie. It's a small slice, but a real one.
This is the quiet giant. Fidgeting, standing, walking to the kitchen, taking the stairs, gesturing while you talk — all the movement that isn't deliberate exercise. Called NEAT (non-exercise activity thermogenesis), it varies enormously between people and can account for hundreds of calories a day. Someone with an active job and a habit of pacing can out-burn a desk worker before either sets foot in a gym.
And here's the humbling part: for many people, structured exercise is one of the smaller slices — frequently in the range of 15–30% of total daily burn, and often less. A hard 45-minute session is real and worthwhile, but it rarely dwarfs the other three components.
Because it's the piece you can most directly see and control in the moment. You can't consciously dial your basal metabolic rate up and down. You can decide to go for a walk. Cal Core doesn't claim exercise is the whole picture — it takes one concrete, controllable slice of "calories out" and makes it tangible: this meal, this activity, roughly this long.
Turning an abstract number like "700 calories" into "about an hour of cycling" isn't a prescription to go do that hour. It's a way to build intuition about the relationship between what you eat and what movement costs — so the trade-offs stop feeling invisible.
