The higher the MET, the faster you work through a calorie deficit. Cal Core uses published MET values from sports science research, so the estimates aren't guesses — they're grounded in measured oxygen-consumption data from exercise labs.
Walking gets underestimated because it feels easy, but it adds up more reliably than almost any other activity because people actually do it consistently. A 30-minute walk at a moderate pace burns roughly 150–200 kcal depending on your weight — the equivalent of a small snack. The real advantage of walking is sustainability: you can do it every day without recovery time, without equipment, and without it feeling like a chore. High-intensity activities burn more per minute, but consistency almost always beats peak intensity for long-term calorie balance.
Accurate enough to be useful, not precise enough to be gospel. MET-based calculations typically fall within 10–20% of actual measured calorie burn for most people. The main sources of variation are individual metabolism (which can differ by 15% between people of the same weight and fitness level), technique (running with poor form burns less efficiently), and environmental factors like heat, altitude, and incline. Rowing machine and high-intensity cycling both sit at the top of Cal Core's activity list at around 8–10 MET, meaning they burn roughly twice as many calories per minute as a moderate walk. Jump rope is similarly high-intensity. However, the best activity for burning calories is the one you'll actually stick to — a 45-minute swim you enjoy beats a 20-minute HIIT session you abandon halfway through.
