How walking burns calories

Walking keeps your heart rate gently elevated through repetitive, low-impact movement. Because the effort per step is small, your body can sustain it for long stretches without fatigue, which is exactly why total daily walking volume adds up more than people expect.

At 3.5 MET, a brisk walk burns a little more than three times what your body uses at rest — enough to matter over a full day, even if a single walk feels unremarkable.

What changes the real number

  • Pace: a brisk walk (around 4-4.5 km/h) burns noticeably more than a stroll
  • Terrain: hills and uneven ground raise the effort without changing your pace
  • Incline: even a slight incline on a treadmill increases burn rate substantially
  • Step length and cadence: shorter, faster steps can raise heart rate more than long, slow strides

Technique notes

  • Keep a tall posture and let your arms swing naturally — this recruits more muscle than a stiff walk
  • Land midfoot rather than on your heel to keep the stride efficient over long distances
  • Add short bursts of faster pace rather than walking uniformly slow the whole time
  • Walking poles or an incline route turn an easy walk into a moderate one without changing distance
